The Use of Automated Library System in Technical College, Thailand. (Abstract) "Natrapintr Benjawong"
This 'technological library project' was under the jurisdiction of the Technical College Division and the first data on the use of automated library systems were collected using questionnaires. These data were analyzed by percentage analysis. The second set of data on problems and needs encountered by libraries were collected by interviewing 15 library chiefs, whose educational background was library science. The library chiefs had experience using software including cataloguing, circulation, and online public access catalogue. These date were analyzed by the method of content analysis.
It was found that ISIS 2000, Library 2000 and Library 2001 were the most widely used software. The developers of the software were Thai. The hardware used among the librarians was a networking system. In all libraries the personnel included a chief librarian, a teacher who served as an assistant librarian, and a general library assistant. Most of the staff had 1 to 5 years computer applications experience. Most of the libraries had small budgets for maintenance and a staff development, averaging less than 10,000 baht.
In terms of problems of library use incompetent personnel was the most serious one. Other serious problems were inadequate budge, out of date software, lack of system analysis, and development, and lack of up to date hardware.
Needs for automated library systems are more computer qualified staff, larger budgets, for staff development and for hardware acquisition and maintenance, and user friendly software which facilitates learning. The transferability of date and the compatability of the old and new version of software should be taken into consideration The person in charge must pay close attention and provide high quality installation services, which includes maintenance and updating of new software programs.
